Creative Vintage Map Cubes Ideas 7.1

Commemorate a favorite destination or even your hometown when you display these Vintage Map Deco Cubes. If you don’t have vintage maps, the instructions below include a “recipe” for antiquing paper to create a vintage finish.

Materials

Other Materials

Vintage map, or a fold-out map or old atlas*
Paper paste
*Note: To antique your paper, you’ll also need brown acrylic craft paint or sepia ink; a sponge or old rag; iron and ironing board.

Optional: rubber brayer or roller

Instructions
1. Cut out two, 5-1/2” squares and one, 20-1/4” x 5” strip of map paper.

2. Spread a thin, even layer of paper glue onto the top of the 5” cube using the paintbrush.

3. Center and glue a 5-1/2” map square onto the top. Carefully clip the corners and smooth the edges down onto the sides. Repeat, covering the bottom of the cube. Optional: Use the rubber brayer to help smooth out the paper.

4. Test fit the paper strip around the cube, and crisply fold the corners. Spread a thin layer of adhesive on the sides of the cube of STYROFOAM Brand Foam, and wrap the paper strip around the cube. The ends will overlap by ¼”.

5. *How to “antique” maps for a vintage look:

6. Mix ¼ cup of water and 1 T. of light brown, acrylic craft paint or sepia ink in a glass bowl. Mix well. Adjust the color by adding more paint, ink or water.

7. Crumple the map into a ball. Smooth out the paper and paint it with a generous coat of the tinted water.

8. Blot the paper unevenly with a sponge or rag, creating a mottled finish.

9. Repeat for a darker finish.
When dry, iron flat.
